In Hong Kong, students of public universities will soon pay higher tuition fees. After a long duration of two decades of constant fees, tuition rates will now rise starting from the 2025/26 academic year.

According to some local media reports, tuition of eight public universities will see an increase by approximately 5 to 9 percent per year for the next three academic sessions.

Impacts on students and international enrollment

The current tuition fees for UGC - sponsored programmes is HK$42,100 fri each academic session.Since the academic year 1997–1998 there has been no modification in this charge. However, government officials declared that there will be an increase in cost by 17.6% to HK $49,500 by 2027.

Though students know that the increasing expenses will strain their budget, they think they can handle it, according to Erudera.

Earlier this year, the UGC declared their plans to contribute around HK$30 million for Hong Kong's industrialisation initiatives, with a rise in tuition fees. Over the upcoming four years, this investment aims to draw in more overseas students. Currently China sends the most no. of international students to Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong government also has cleared its intention to raise the amount of student housing by 2027 parallel to the rising demand for education. With this project, the objective of the city is to  become a destination for education and  to accommodate the growing number of international students. As per the report of Erudera, Hong Kong's public institutions continue to prioritise improving their educational facilities and reaching globally, even with the limited budget.
