Choosing the right college for you depends upon your area of interest, your scores and your budget. There might be many colleges that you like but getting into them might be challenging.


There are a few standardised exams to get into colleges like SAT, ACT, GRE and GMAT. 


There are two intakes that colleges in the USA offer. One is the Fall intake and the other one is the spring intake. You should particularly start your application process three months in advance. 


In order to shortlist colleges, one must consider factors like the city, the fee structure, student facilities, and good placement options. 


Colleges only offer undergraduate degrees whereas universities offer post graduate and doctoral programs too. 


You must have attended high school and should be at least 17 years of age. 


With permission of the International Student Office, international students may work on campus up to 20 hours/week their first year and can apply to work off-campus in subsequent years.


It is different for every college but it usually ranges from 1200-1600. 


GRE is not required for undergraduate programs, but the minimum score needed for post graduate course ranges from 315-320.

You should apply for a US Visa 120 days before the date of enrolment mentioned in the I-20 form.

Acceptance from a US  University  -Apply at the US embassy or a consulate. 


You need the minimum band of 6.


Exams that you will have to take are SAT (undergraduate), ACT (American Common Test)  GRE/GMAT (graduate)  and english proficiency test like IELTS or TOEFL   


Every bank has its own criteria to sanction an education loan to its customers. However the standard criteria remains the same for all the banks which includes: 

  • Admission confirmation letters and papers validating any scholarships the applicant has qualified for.
  • Schedule of expenses for the course including tuition fees and other expenses.
  • Score sheet of qualifying test(s).
  • Copies of foreign exchange permit/student visa for overseas studies.
  • Bank account statements for the last 6 months. (Can be a joint account with parent/guardian)
  • Statement of assets and liabilities of the borrower.
  • Proof of age
  • Proof of residence
  • 2 passport size photographs
  • Documents related to collateral required for education loans exceeding Rs. 4 lakhs.


Mostly loans cover all the major expenses that a student goes through. A generalised list of the expenses covered. A general education loan for Indian students covers the following list of expenses.

Applying for a loan can be a tedious process. The list of the documents is long but they can be easily procured if done systematically and under guidance. The documents you would need are: Proof of age

  • Proof of residence 
  • 2 passport size photographs 
  • Bank statement for last 6 months (can be a joint account with parent/guardian) 
  • Statement of assets and liabilities of the borrower. 
  • Documents related to the collateral required for education loans exceeding 4 lacs. 
  • Confirmation of the admission including the letters and paper validating the scholarships if any. 
  • Schedule of expenses of the course as and when required. 
  • Score of the qualifying test
  • Copiers of student visa for overseas studies.


Most lenders have a maximum limit of Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 15 lakhs for studies within India, while the maximum limit on education loans for overseas studies is between Rs 20 lakhs to Rs30 lakhs. In case of some lenders, the applicant can get a higher loan amount sanctioned provided bank-accepted collateral is provided.  


  An eduication loan can be availed for almost all courses recognised by UGC in case of India and other regular courses abroad. Each lender has its own list of educational institutions and courses that they would provide a loan for whether overseas or within India.
